A Book Printer Specialized in Photography Art

Art Book Printing.com set out to be the best printer of coffee table books in the world. When we think about large full color art books, what comes to mind are books about oil painters.

Printing Photography as Art Books

coloradopraries4The art world too often regards the camera as the tool used to capture art, not to create art. Now, having served several clients to print coffee table-style photography art books, I have learned that photography not only requires tremendous skill, but also God-given talent.

Capturing an image

Even working “en plain air”, an artist who uses oil, brushes and canvas has a reasonable window of time to fill the canvas. In the studio, lighting – and therefore time – can be controlled. Many artists use photo references, giving them much additional time to fine-tune the work. In contrast, the art photographer often just has a split second to create the art. Often the subject is moving or otherwise unaware of being the object d’art.

Special Requirements for the Printer of Photography Art Books

To reproduce photography art poses special challenges for the printer. Coated paper with the correct brightness and reflection is much more critical. True photography artists are often much more color critical than their “oil and paintbrush” colleagues!

Printing Black and White Photo Books

In coffee table books, black and white photography is seldom just black ink on white paper. Art Book Printing.com offers two processes to reproduce the finest monochrome images: CMYK printing, which uses the four process colors, and Sepiana BW, which uses a proprietary process of two blacks and two greys for a super-rich black and white image. Please talk to us if you are contemplating printing a coffee table style book with black and white images.

Enhancing digital images for color printing of coffee table books

Today, all of our photography clients capture images that have more than adequate resolution for reproduction in print. Many photographers also use Adobe® Photoshop to enhance images or to correct flaws. All Digital cameras capture images in RGB color space and these images have to be converted to CMYK color space for our printing process. This is single step command in Photoshop® (Image > Mode > CMYK) that will not affect the image unless the color is pushed out of gamut in Photoshop®. That small warning triangle in Photoshop is too often ignored. It tells you that the color you see on your monitor is out of printable range. We therefore recommend that you convert and view your images to CMYK before you upload them to us. It will avoid disappointment when you receive your printer’s proofs
